Courage to Care: Caring Your Family During Flu Season

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, which can result in hospitalization, even death. Older people, young children and people with certain health conditions are at increased risk for serious complications. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to be vaccinated each year.

Some people have fears about the flu shot. It is important to discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider. Not getting the flu shot can be of much greater risk than any flu shot reaction, which is uncommon and generally mild and self-limited.

This Courage to Care addresses some issues that may be unique to service members and their families and require attention in preparation for flu season. We also present tips for practicing good basic hygiene and following established recommendations.
