Lars Weisaeth, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry (Psycho-traumatology), Medical Faculty, University of Oslo and Senior Research Supervisor of Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress Studies. His military ranks include Major in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon in 1978, and Captain, Major and Lieutenant Colonel from 1983-1985.

From 1974 to the present, Dr. Weisaeth has been a leader in the field of traumatic stress. A previous board member and vice-president of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies, he has been an invited keynote lecturer to over 30 countries and works in close collaboration with Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Dept. of Psychiatry in Bethesda, Maryland, US; Kings College, Dept. of Psychiatry, London; Knowledge Centre for Disaster Psychiatry, Uppsala University, Sweden.

Through NATO’s workgroup on military psychiatry, Dr. Weisaeth has 20 years of professional involvement and consultation around terror, crises and war-preparedness and military operations. His World Health Organization experiences encompass being part of psychiatric teams that have evaluated the mental health of the Kuwaiti population in 1991 after the first Gulf War, evaluating and making recommendations to the Health Ministry in Serbia, Croatia and as consultant for evaluation and disaster risk and AIDS problems in South Africa, 1991.

He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Harald Frøshaugs Memorial Lecture, Finnish Military Medical Officer’s Gold medal, Queen Alexandrine’s Honorary Award. (Denmark), The Laufer Award for Outstanding Scientific Research on PTSD (International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies), Life Time Achievement Award (International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies) and The Wolter de Loos Award (European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
